Karoo Running (KR) - Firstly, thank you for taking the time out to share a bit of yourself with us, we really appreciate it.
KR - WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT TRAIL RUNNING?
BR - The freedom of running, and being as close as possible to nature. Trail running gets me to places the normal person/tourist can’t see by car.
KR - HOW DID YOU BECOME A TRAIL RUNNER?
BR - I was a proper road runner, until a friend invited me to a 10k trail. I still do the odd road race, but prefer trail by far.
KR - WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRAIL?
BR - Unfair question, I honestly can’t tell, but if I have to choose, it will be the following in no order Otter, Cape Town Ultra Trail, Skyrun
KR - WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAIL RUNNING BEGINNERS?
BR - First get fit/strong on the road. Start by doing half the distance you can do on road. Never go alone. Forget about all the fancy gear except for a proper hydration pack, buy once, buy the best, buy Ultraspire.
KR- WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRAIL RUNNING GEAR? (EX. SHOES, HYDRATION PACK, HEADLAMP, SOCKS, ETC…)
Shoes - Vivobarefoot , minimalist barefoot shoes, once your feet get stronger you can do any distance in them. I’ve done Cape Town Ultra 100km and Skyrun 100km in Vivos. In trail running you need all your senses to work together, why would you put a big cushion under your feet? Taking away all the proprioception? Also zero drop, you would agree with me that you have more control and balance when barefoot on the ground. So why do you want your heel higher than your toes?
Hydration Pack - I already mentioned Ultraspire. Lightweight, durable, flexible – using the same pack for 15km up to 160km.
Wind shell and Rain jacket – OMM, Ultra light and breathable.
KR- WHAT IS AN AVERAGE DAY OF TRAIL RUNNING TRAINING FOR YOU?
BR - I’m blessed to have very flexible working hours. I do believe that you work hard and play hard. That’s why I get enough time to balance my day between Family, Work and Running. I’m one of the fortunate dads who drop the kids off at school, then have about an hour to kill at the gym. 9am I’m at my Vodashop in Irene Mall until 13:40 when I pick up the kids and then home and training!!
KR - WHAT IS YOUR LONGEST DISTANCE YOU HAVE DONE ON A TRAIL?
BR - 100km and will attempt 100 MILE ADDO (161km!) on Friday 26 Feb.
KR - HOW MUCH DO YOU EAT WHEN YOU ARE TRAINING?
BR - I eat way too much!!!
KR - WHAT DO YOU TAKE WITH YOU ON YOUR LONG RUNS? (EX: GELS, FRUIT, SNACKS, SALT TABS, ETC…)
BR - 32GI Foodbars!!! Magnesium and some 32GI Endure in my bottle.
KR- HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TRAIL RUNNING IN THE KAROO?
BR - Nope, wish I could soon be running there!!
KR - WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORK "KAROO", WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND, OTHER THAN WIDE OPEN SPACES?
BR - Dry and HOT!!!
KR - Thank you very much for sharing your time, experience and knowledge with us, we truly appreciate it, and hope to see you on some Karoo trails soon.
