Karoo Running (KR) - Firstly, thank you for taking the time out to share a bit of yourself with us, we really appreciate it
KR - What is it that you love about trail running?
RS - I love the direct connection to nature it gives me and the sense of freedom. Trail running has enabled me to travel all around the world and run on all seven continents.
KR - How did you become a trail runner?
RS - I ran the Knysna Marathon in 2006 and really enjoyed the experience so I continued running. Living in Cape Town on the back slopes of Table Mountain it was not long before I discovered the trails.
KR - What is your favorite trail?
RS - The Otter Trail
KR - What are you recommendations for trail running beginners?
RS - Make sure you enjoy the experience and take in your beautiful surroundings. The more you enjoy your running that better you will get. Don't feel bad to power hike the steeper climbs on a trail - it can be more efficient than trying to run.
KR - What is your favorite trail running gear? (ex: Shoes, Hydration pack, headlamp, socks)
RS - I really enjoy the variety and comfort that Salomon shoes provide me. My favourite Salomon’s to run in are the Sense Ultra and the Sense Pro. I am currently running in the Suunto Ambit 3 custom watch and my Oakley Prizm trail lenses are awesome for running on the trails. The Salomon range of skin bags make running so simple and easy!
KR - What is an average day of trail running for you?
RS - It depends, some days it's a longish run of 3-8 hours and other days I do two shorter runs of 90min or so each. I also do some cross training and strength work.
KR - What is your longest distance you have done in a trail?
RS - 210km non-stop (The Drakensberg Grand Traverse)
KR - How much do you eat when you are training?
RS - I eat lots ... I try eat a healthy whole food diet but I don't follow a strict diet. You have to enjoy life and you can't beat a craft beer and burger after a long day of running.
KR- Do you have a favourite running app? If so, which one and why?
RS - I use Training Peaks to log my training and I find it very effective to keep track of my mileage and sessions I have run. I also use Suunto Movesount which is very interactive and I can see exactly where I have run etc.
KR- Have you ever been to the Karoo?
RS - Yes but normally it's just an overnight stay when I am travelling. I would really like to stay there longer.
KR - When you hear the word "Karoo", what is the first thing that come to mind, other than wide open arid space?
RS - Dry, beautiful, brown, hot
KR - Thank you very much for sharing your time, experience and knowledge with us, we truly appreciate it, and hope to see you on some Karoo trails soon.
